SPS-supported Multi-Year Projects (MYPs) enable scientists from NATO and partner nations to collaborate on applied Research and Development, and capacity building projects that result in new civil science advancements with practical application in the security and defence fields. Detailed information on MYPs is available on the SPS Website.
Interested parties should develop an application for funding that must:
- be led by a project director of a NATO nationality residing and working in a NATO country (NPD) and a project director of a NATO partner country nationality residing and working in a partner country (PPD). Additional co-directors from NATO and its partner nations are encouraged.
- directly address at least one of the
SPS Key Priorities with a clear link to security;
- follow the rules and regulations outlined in the
SPS Multi-Year Projects Handbook;
- ensure that the NPD institution can receive and manage NATO SPS Funds in accordance with SPS regulations;
- include all required documents, as listed below;
- have a tentative start date no less than 9 months following the Application Call deadline.
Required Documents
The following documents, included in the downloadable application package, should be completed and submitted via the NATO Award System (NAS) portal, at the time of application:

- MYP Application Acceptance of Funds (template provided).
- Agreement for Joint Research (template provided).
- CVs for all Co-Directors (to be completed directly in the Application form).
- Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (IPR) (example provided)
OR a signed Waiver (own format).
- A brief overview of the participating institutions, their capabilities, resources, and facilities. Please include the address of the institutional web page as well as the web address of any school or institute linked to the project (own format).
- End-user Commitments (own format).
- The Project Summary (to be completed directly in the Application form).

How to Create and Submit an MYP Application on NAS
All SPS-supported activities require as a minimum the identification of a NATO country Project Director (NPD) and a Partner country Project Director (PPD). Additional co-directors from NATO and its partner nations are encouraged.
Please ensure that you have read and accept the detailed information in relation to SPS and the MYPs before starting your application and have downloaded the MYP Documentation.
- Only the NPD may initiate an application on the NAS via registering to an Open Call.
- Only the NPD, as initiator, may invite the PPD and other Co-Directors to have access to the application.
Note: In order to receive the invitation e-mail one must first have registered to the NAS Portal, ESC/SPS.
- Only the NPD may submit the finalized application via the NAS Portal.
- Following submission, any queries/requests between the NPD and the SPS Office may be communicated via a “Change Request” (from the NPD) or “More Information” from the SPS Office.
It is important to note that your application may be submitted only for the Call to which you have applied, i.e. it is not transferable to another Call should you not submit before the Call deadline.
